Company Overview
NBI is a private, non-profit, pharmaceutical company that manufactures plasma-derived medicinal products (PDMPs) from fresh frozen plasma of human origin, using the process of cold ethanol fractionation. These products are marketed, sold and distributed to reach South and Southern African patients. The company’s manufacturing site and head office are located in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal.
NBI's comprehensive range of PDMPs are registered with the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), and several of NBI’s PDMPs are registered with the Botswana Medicines Regulatory Authority (BoMRA), the Namibia Medicines Regulatory Council (NMRC) and the Ministry of Health and Wellness (Mauritius).
Several of NBI’s products are also listed in the South African Essential Medicines List (EML) as well as the World Health Organisation's EML.
The Biotechnology department within the company develops and manufactures diagnostic kits and monoclonal antibodies for the South African and international diagnostic market.
NBI is a B-BBEE compliant organisation.
Our History
NBI commenced fractionation operations in the late 1960’s as part of the local blood transfusion service, the then Natal Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), which was located in Prince Street, Durban. The fractionation operations expanded through the years as component therapy advanced. In March 1994, NBI was incorporated as an independent, non-profit company under the name Natal Bioproducts Institute, with a staff complement of 62 employees. In 2003, NBI changed its name to National Bioproducts Institute to reflect its geographic footprint as a proudly South African company. Today, NBI remains at its site in Pinetown and has a staff complement of over 280 employees.
